What a great 4th meeting of the [Gen]AI Italy meetup yesterday in Milan, where I joined an A-Team of speakers by FairMind who delved deep into open-source models and architectures for GenAI, moving from theory to real-world implementation.

🔹 Alexio Cassani kicked it off with a survey on the state of the art of open models. Starting from a thought-provoking exploration of “Open… What?”, he challenged our assumptions about open-source LLMs while pressing an important point: open model training, evaluation, and deployment architectures are crucial for LLM research to move forward outside walled gardens. This sustains a vital open model ecosystem that enables data protection, IP retention, and ultimately, business sustainability of GenAI solutions.

🔹 I built on this foundation by exploring how enterprises are integrating GenAI architectures within their broader technology landscape, and where adopting open-source makes sense in that context. We examined the wealth of open options available beyond the LLM itself—from monitoring and observability to versioning, caching, serving, privacy, and memory management.

🔹 Walid Iguider, wrapped up with an open-only production use case based on an advanced “Mixture of Mixture of Agents” pattern—shall we call it M²A, demonstrating the practical power of these concepts in action.

What truly made the evening special was our engaged audience of GenAI practitioners. Their insightful questions prove that Italy’s GenAI ecosystem has moved well beyond the hype phase into serious implementation.
Hosted at Talent Garden, one couldn’t ask for more from a tech meetup: a two-hour lively exchange of ideas to end CloudDay on a high note.
